Netherlands vs Denmark Match Analysis : Holland ran out 2-0 winners over Denmark in Group E after taking the lead through an own goal. Dirk Kuyt added a late second to wrap up the points after a game in which Holland had the better of the play without really looking like hitting top form.
With Arjen Robben missing through injury, Rafael van der Vaart started in the centre and Welsey Sneijder moved out wide on the left. Denmark started with Nicklas Bentdner in attack, despite his recent injury.
Both sides seemed keen to get the ball on the deck early on and though the passing was fluent, clear cut chances were few and far between. Denmark’s Martin Jorgensen had an early shot blocked and Holland’s Dirk Kuyt forced a save from Thomas Sorensen.
The Dutch forced several corners but could not make the set pieces count and looked better operating in tight spaces rather than playing an expansive game. Denmark were solid in defence in the opening period but were slow to take chances to counter.
The game remained scoreless at half-time but neither coach felt the need to make a change. Straight after the restart though, Denmark found themselves a goal down but it was down to a defensive calamity rather than Dutch brilliance.
Simon Poulsen headed a cross and it looked to be going wide of the post but the ball bounced off Daniel Agger’s back and into the net. Fifa credited Poulsen with the own goal but the player will no doubt be unhappy that he goes down in the history books when his header was not goalbound.
Denmark did not quite roar back after the setback but continued with a stuffy and functional approach. They tried to bring their attacking players into the match when possible but maintained a disciplined approach to an increasingly attacking Dutch approach.
The introduction of Eljero Elia saw an injection of pace and trickery on the left flank and it was from there that the second goal came five minutes from time. A sublime threaded pass from Sneijder sent Elia clear and he cut inside before sidefooting a shot past Sorensen and off the post. Kuyt tapped in what will have been one of the simplest of his 16 international goals. Netherlands vs Denmark Match Photos :
