Ghana vs Australia Match Analysis : Australia were left ruing missed opportunities to win their World Cup match with Ghana on Saturday afternoon, despite playing with 10 men for over an hour of the match. Harry Kewell’s red card for handball on the line led to Asamoah Gyan cancelling out Brett Holman’s early opener to make the score 1-1, in a game which swung from end to end in a high-tempo finish.
Australia, keen to get a result to banish the memories of their 4-0 humiliation by Germany in their opening game, took to the field with Pim Verbeek naming a far more positive formation. Kewell was called into the starting 11, with AZ Alkmaar’s Brett Holman replacing the suspended Tim Cahill.
Kewell had an early penalty shout denied and goalkeeper Richard Kingson collided with a nervy Lee Addy before the Socceroos capitalised on a mistake by the Ghana number one to open the scoring.
Mark Bresciano’s free-kick was on target but looked an easy take for Kingson, who instead fumbled the ball into the path of Holman, who clipped the ball into the top right corner of the net from close range with 11 minutes gone.
14 minutes later, Ghana were level after being awarded a penalty. Kewell was ideally placed on the left hand post to block Anthony Annan’s goalbound effort but stuck out his right arm to prevent the goal, leaving referee Roberto Rosetti with no option other than to send the former Leeds United and Liverpool forward off and point to the spot.
The Australian playmaker protested vehemently with the whistler, urging him to review his decision on the Royal Bafokeng stadium’s big screens behind the goal. Unsurprisingly, Kewell couldn’t convince the Italian to go against the rules by becoming the first official to use video evidence and, if he had, it would have been proven Rosetti was spot on to dismiss the player for preventing a goalscoring opportunity.
Gyan kept a cool head throughout continued appeals from Kewell and his Australian team-mates, remaining composed to place the ball beyond Mark Schwarzer from the penalty spot.
Unable to make their numerical advantage count, Ghana sent on former Arsenal and Portsmouth forward Quincy Owusu-Abeyie 10 minutes into the second period in an attempt to break Australia’s dogged determination to hold onto a point.
The Black Stars enjoyed the majority of the possession but were left to resort to continued long range efforts, with goal scorer Gyan unable to make any meanwhile contribution in front of goal in open play, passing up a number of oportuntiies.
In fact it was Australia who were enjoying the better of the second half chances, holding Ghana within their own half as they tried to take all three points and keep their hopes of reaching the second round on track.
Finding themselves in the ascendancy, looking nothing like a team down to 10 men, their big chance arrived courtesy of a perfect pass from substitute Scott Chipperfield with 19 minutes remaining. The Basel player found Wilkshire unmarked in the area who, after a good first touch, had only Kingson to beat.
The Ghana keeper was quick to react and get off his line, narrowing the angle for the Australian player whose name was almost already up in lights. Having to rush his finish, Wilkshire tried to squeeze the ball under the keeper’s dive but saw his shot blocked when he looked certain to score.
Verbeek threw on strikers Joshua Kennedy and Nikita Rukavytsya in a desperate attempt to get the winning goal their play deserved but it was Ghana who had the last shot at goal. Owusu Abeyie found room to record Ghana’s 22nd shot of the game and his long range effort was on target. Schwarzer, however, was well placed to tip it over the bar. Ghana vs Australia Match Photos :
