Road to second round of Ghana : Ghana vs Serbia (1-0) Ghana vs Australia (1-1) Ghana vs Germany (1-0) United States vs Ghana Match Analysis : Ghana wrote themselves into the history books alongside Senegal and Cameroon in becoming the third African nation to reach the quarter finals of the World Cup on Saturday night. A 2-1 win after extra-time against the USA in Rustenburg sent them through to the last eight, with Asamoah Gyan scoring the winning goal in the 93rd minute.
Kevin-Prince Boateng had given the Black Stars an early lead in normal time, before America again sparked a comeback through Landon Donovan’s penalty equaliser just after the hour mark.
But for all their endeavour, the US couldn’t make their second half domination pay and were punished when Gyan found room to rattle the ball over Tim Howard after shaking off the attentions of Carlos Bocanegra.
Ghana got off to a flying start and, five minutes in, Africa’s last participants in the competition were in front. Michael Bradley made the wrong decision to try and take the ball forward in midfield, allowing the ball to break to Boateng.
In just his fourth start for his country, the Portsmouth player burst through the heart of the US defence, tying up Jay DeMerit before surging down the outside and beating Tim Howard at his front post from just outside the area.
Specialists at comebacks so far in this World Cup, the US looked to get back into the game but were held back by a spirited Ghana side, who passed up a number of chances to extend their lead.
Half-time couldn’t have came quickly enough for Bob Bradley’s side and, just as they had done in their comeback against Slovenia in the groups, they started the second half with a new lease of life.
Just after the hour mark, America were level. Having continued to surge forward, Dempsey was caught by Jonathan in the box after a clever nutmeg, with the referee not hesitating in pointing to the spot.
Their hero so far, Donovan, stepped up coolly to send the ball to Richard Kingson’s right, clipping the post on its way in to level the scores and give the US fans hope of progression to face Uruguay in the last eight.
The US surged forward in the second half but, registering just six chances on goal, couldn’t engineer a way past a determined Ghana defence. Kingson was brave in challenging a number of well-contested high balls, while Bradley and Jozy Altidore both passed up glorious one-on-one chances to come from behind and lead.
Going into extra time, Ghana again wasted no time in blazing in front. A long ball from the back was chased down by Gyan, who outpaced Bocanegra. Bearing down on goal, he unleashed his shot with his left boot, lifting the ball over Howard and into the centre of the net.
Knowing they had one foot in the next round, Ghana strived hard to retain possession and were also guilty of a few moments of gamesmanship. But the US couldn’t find a way through, finding a number of efforts in the box crowded out by a number of desperate Ghana players.
With three minutes added on, Donovan stood over the ball for his team’s last roll of the dice at a corner. With keeper Howard forward, the ball was pinged back into the box on a number of occasions before DeMerit’s half volley sailed wide of Kingson’s left hand post, ending the US’ hopes of advancing and sending Ghana into dreamland.
